On March 21–22, the delegation headed by Chairman of the Board of the Center of the Analysis of International Relations, Farid Shafiyev, held meetings with local think tanks and public representatives in Japan. Within the framework of the visit, meetings were held at the Japanese Institute of International Affairs (JIIA), the International Friendship Exchange Council (FEC), and the Middle East Institute (MEIJ). Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Japan, Gursel Ismayilzada, also participated in the meetings.
On March 21, the AIR Center delegation met with the senior management of the International Friendship Exchange Council (FEC), the representatives of the public and exchanged views on the history and prospects of friendly relations between Azerbaijan and Japan. The contribution of cooperation between think tanks and relevant institutions to bilateral relations was specifically emphasized.
During the meeting with the experts of the Japanese Institute of International Relations (JIIA), the AIR Center delegation familiarized themselves with the institute’s research and activities. The Japanese experts were informed about the situation in the South Caucasus after the resolution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, newly emerged opportunities and challenges for peace and security. The AIR Center delegation noted that Azerbaijan liberated its territories from occupation during the 44-day Patriotic War and the anti-terror measures of 2023, thereby creating important opportunities for stability and economic prosperity in the region. The AIR Center delegation responded to the questions of JIIA experts regarding the events in the South Caucasus and the surrounding region. The parties also discussed the possibilities of cooperation in the fields of research and information exchange. In the end, a commemorative photo was taken in front of the painting presented to JIIA by President Ilham Aliyev during his visit to Tokyo in 2006.
On March 22, the AIR Center delegation attended a roundtable discussion organized at the Middle East Institute (MEIJ) together with the Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Japan, Gursel Ismayilzada. Initially, the President of the MEIJ, Akitaka Saiki, informed the AIR Center delegation about the geopolitical and economic processes taking place in Japan and the surrounding region. He said that the MEIJ is closely monitoring the relation's of Azerbaijan with the Middle Eastern countries and shared his views on this topic. Farid Shafiyev, the AIR Center Chairman, and Vasif Huseynov, the head of department, gave information about Azerbaijan’s foreign policy, its activities within the framework of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), the prospects of Azerbaijan-Japan relations, and answered their questions. The parties exchanged views on the importance of establishing cooperation between the AIR Center and the MEIJ, the exchange of experts, and holding joint events and conferences.
