An updated edition of the book “Descendants of a Common Culture - Iraqi Turkmans and Azerbaijan” has been published with the initiative and support of the Center for the Analysis of International Relations (AIR Center).
In the foreword, AIR Center Chairman Farid Shafiyev emphasizes that preserving historical, cultural, and literary ties, as well as strengthening connections with communities living abroad who identify with the Azerbaijani cultural sphere, is an important part of Azerbaijan’s foreign policy.
“Today, the strong relationship between Azerbaijan and Iraq creates valuable opportunities to further develop cultural and literary ties between the two nations, especially among the Turkman community,” he notes.
The book offers an in-depth look at the history, demographics, settlement patterns, socio-economic life, lifestyle, customs, and traditions of Iraqi Turkmans. It also explores their role in Iraq’s history, highlights notable figures, and examines the historical ties between Azerbaijanis and Iraqi Turkmans.
The project is led by Kanan Rovshanoglu, a representative of the Eurasian International Development Association (EIDA).
The research was carried out in collaboration with scholars and experts from both Azerbaijan and Iraq. Contributors include Mahmud Khalil Jafar, Jafar Talafari, Ismail Aslanoghlu, Rza Alioghlu, Naznaz Tevfig, Hussam Davud Hizir Erbilli, Burhan Saleh, and Choban Hidir Uluhan from Iraq, as well as Natig Rahimov, Laman Suleymanova, Aynur Jalilova, Mahsati Suleymanova, Kanan Rovshanoglu, Rizvan Mammadsoy, and Orkhan Isayev from Azerbaijan.
The book is intended for the field researchers, journalists, and a wide audience interested in the Turkman community.
