An international conference on "Iraqi Turkmen and the Turkic World: Restoration of the Historical Memory" was jointly organized by the Center of Analysis of International Relations (AIR Center) and the Baku International Multiculturalism Center. The conference was attended by well-known public figures, journalists, and non-governmental organization representatives from Iraq, Netherlands, Germany, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. Prior to the beginning of the conference guests visited the grave of the national leader Heydar Aliyev, prominent ophthalmology scientist, academician Zarifa Aliyeva, the Alley of Martyrs and the "Turkish Martyrdom" monument.
As the conference started, Ravan Hasanov, executive director of the Baku International Multiculturalism Center, stated in his opening speech that Azerbaijan is bound by historical and cultural ties with Turkmen compatriots. Farid Shafiyev, Chairman of the Center of Analysis of International Relations (AIR Center), stated that the event is scientific and cultural in nature and was planned within the framework of Iraqi-Azerbaijan relations.
Maki Rossan Al-Mamori, Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in the Republic of Azerbaijan, stated that an important work is being done to strengthen relations between Azerbaijan and Iraq and this conference will help to enhance the process further. He also stated that the Iraqi government is considering to cooperate in the construction and restoration works on the territories freed from the occupation.
Arshad Saleh, an Iraqi parliament member, stated that one of primary goals is to preserve and enhance the historical memory of the Turkic world. Shamseddin Kuzechi, head of the Kirkuk Turkmen Culture Association, highlighted the importance of bringing Turkic countries closer together. He expressed confidence that the meeting will add to the work being done in this field.
Panel discussions continued throughout the conference. In total, around 30 reports were given over the conference's six sessions. By the end of the conference, the Turkmen delegates addressed an appeal to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev.
