The Center of Analysis of International Relations (AIR Center) and the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) with the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the United Kingdom organized a joint roundtable titled “Azerbaijan in the South Caucasus: Regional Economic and Security Dynamics” on September 25, 2023 in London, the United Kingdom. The delegation from the Republic of Azerbaijan consisting of Dr. Farid Shafiyev, Chairman, AIR Center, Dr Taleh Ziyadov, Director-General, Baku International Sea Port and Shahmar Hajiyev, Senior Advisor, AIR Center participated at the event. During the roundtable sessions, the panelists discussed two important topics entitled “The Shifting International Politics of the South Caucasus” and “Energy Security and the Middle Corridor”. Touching upon the post-conflict developments in the region, the speakers noted that the South Caucasus is experiencing important internal changes. Progress in negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia has raised the prospect of a peace agreement and wider stabilization, but some key issues remain to be resolved. The region is also experiencing a growing interest from external actors as new opportunities for trade and transit open, but also as geopolitical and security competition intensifies.
Moreover, the South Caucasus has significant potential as an international transit and trade route linking Europe and Asia and providing energy supplies to regional and world markets.
