In November 2024, Azerbaijan hosted the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) summit, uniting global leaders in the collective fight against climate change. The decision was made at the plenary session of COP28 on December 11, 2023. Heads of state and governments, civil society organizations, businesses, and international institutions came together in the South Caucasus from November 11 to 22 to discuss climate change, measures to accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement, and focus on long-term climate strategies and goals.
The AIR Center has made its contributions to developing solutions to the challenges, improving policies and decision-making processes through analysis. Numerous articles, analyses, and 2 books (COP29 and Azerbaijan’s Contribution: How Can The Government Promote Climate Agenda?; COP29 Snapshot At Azerbaijan’s Chairmanship: Priorities And Problems) focusing on Azerbaijan's energy policy, green transition strategies, COP29 preparations, as well as Azerbaijan’s strategic contributions and commitments at COP29 and the opportunities offered by the global climate summit have been published.
At the same time, events and workshops have been organized in cooperation with local and international partners.
Among them, the international forum titled "COP 29 and Green Vision for Azerbaijan," jointly organized with the ADA University, brought together 64 experts from 30 countries and saw productive discussions with a special emphasis on sustainable development of the region and Azerbaijan’s green energy policy.
On September 1, 2024, a panel titled "COP 29 and Green Horizons: Navigating Climate Change" was organized by the AIR Center in partnership with GLOBSEC 2024 in Prague.
On October 8, 2024, a roundtable titled "The COP29 Summit: Navigating Climate Change, Peace, and Security" was co-organized by AIR Center and the Royal United Services Institute, RUSI, with the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in London.
On November 15, a side event, co-organized by the AIR Center and Brazil's CEBRI, discussed the roadmaps developed by Brazil and Azerbaijan to address the climate challenges while transitioning to a sustainable energy future.
In addition, a roundtable titled "COP29: From Thinking to Action—Shaping Solutions on Peace and Climate Nexus," jointly organized by the COP29 Presidency and the AIR Center, saw the launch of a dedicated working group of think tanks within the Baku Climate and Peace Action Hub (Baku Hub) to address the critical nexus of climate and peace.
